Switching platforms is one of the highest-leverage decisions a creator can make — and one of the most mishandled. This guide covers what to do before, during and after a platform switch to retain as many fans as possible.
Before you switch: setup checklist
New account setup (do this before announcing):
- Profile complete: bio, header, profile photo
- At least 5 posts live (including a pinned welcome post)
- Subscription price set (match your current price initially — change later)
- Payout method verified and tested with a small withdrawal
- W-8BEN or W-9 submitted if required
- Content protection enabled (watermarks, DMCA registration on Fanvue)
Legal and admin:
- Impressum updated with new platform link (EU creators)
- Privacy policy updated if you’re adding a new data processor
- Business bank account confirmed for the new platform’s payout method
Announcement strategy
The announcement is everything. Best practices:
On the old platform:
- Post an announcement 4–6 weeks before switching
- Pin it at the top of your profile
- Include: where you’re going, why, when, and a direct link
- Follow up at 2 weeks and 1 week before the switch date
On social media:
- Story + feed post on all channels simultaneously with the announcement
- Update your bio link the same day
- Create a short video announcement if video performs well for you
What not to say:
- Don’t complain about the current platform in the announcement (creates anxiety)
- Don’t give a vague timeline (“soon” gets ignored)
- Don’t expect fans to remember — repeat the link multiple times
Migration timing
Best months to switch: January (post-holidays, fans reviewing their subscriptions) and September (back-to-routine engagement spike). Avoid: December, summer holiday weeks.
Running two platforms simultaneously
If you run both platforms for 60–90 days during transition:
- Post the same content on both (or slightly different tiers to push fans toward your preferred platform)
- Price the old platform at a slight premium to create a financial incentive to follow
- After 90 days, review which platform has higher engagement and better economics, then wind down the other
What to expect: realistic migration rates
| Platform move | Typical 60-day migration rate |
|---|---|
| OF → Fanvue (fee saving pitch) | 40–65% |
| OF → Fansly | 35–55% |
| OF → MYM (DACH audience) | 45–70% |
| Any → multi-platform | 80%+ retention (both open) |
Migration rates vary widely based on how actively you promoted the switch, your audience’s platform loyalty and whether you kept the old profile active.
After the switch
- Keep old profile live with pinned migration post for at least 90 days
- Do not delete old content — it may continue generating search/discovery value
- Review payout timing after first two months to confirm cash flow is stable
- Update all affiliate or referral links to point to the new platform
Step by step
- 1 · Decide: full switch or multi-platform: A full switch maximizes your presence on the new platform but risks losing fans who won't follow. Multi-platform splits your attention but keeps revenue streams open during transition.
- 2 · Set up your new account completely before announcing: Profile picture, bio, at least 5–10 posts and a working subscription price should all be live before you tell fans.
- 3 · Announce with a reason and a deadline: Fans need a reason to take action. 'Moving to [platform] on December 1st for faster payouts and lower fees' with a 30-day window gets higher follow-through than an open-ended notice.
- 4 · Create a bridge post on the old platform: Pin a post explaining where to find you. Keep it up for at least 90 days after switching. Do not delete the old account immediately — some fans will check back months later.
- 5 · Redirect your link-in-bio to the new platform: If you use Linktree, Carrd or a similar link hub, update it the day you announce. Social traffic is habit-driven — make the new link the default path.
- 6 · Track follow-through for 60 days: Count how many active subscribers migrated vs. your old subscriber count. Aim for 60%+ transfer rate within 60 days. Below that: consider staying multi-platform longer.
